Golf in Marbella: from local tournaments to the Solheim Cup

The autumn golf season is now well underway in Marbella and the first class golf clubs situated across Málaga province are busy with private bookings and public tournaments. The Costa del Sol is a fully established and universally respected home for the game of golf, and the region is envied throughout Europe for the quantity of high quality courses that it hosts.

News that Marbella’s local authorities are allocating significant money and resources to pitch for the next Solheim Cup will come as no surprise to golfers that know the area well. It has now been reported that the council has approved a large sponsorship package intended to bring the Solheim 2023 Tournament to Marbella’s green courses.

With the popularity of women’s golf ascending at a remarkable pace, it is perfect timing for this region of southern Spain to make a serious bid to host the competition. The Solheim Cup is the sister championship to the men’s Ryder Cup and the most important team event in world golf that is contested by two teams from America and Europe. Monies allocated for pitching for the event stand at 22 million euros and will be provided by Marbella’s council and other administrations, including the regional and provincial governments.
