With the Costa del Sol and Marbella having enjoyed a record year for tourism so far this year the signs are good that the winter season will continue the trend, with apartments and villas for sale and rent in Marbella in ever greater demand.
According to the FRONTUR tourism survey Andalucía welcomed 7,397,700 international tourists in the first nine months of the year, up 6.6 per cent on the same period of 2014, with more than 1 million tourists (1,012,448) visiting the region in September alone—the first time the landmark figure has been topped in September.
Crucial to the success of the Costa del Sol and Andalucía has been the availability of affordable flights to Málaga from an ever-increasing number of European destinations. Low cost carriers such as Norwegian.com, EasyJet, Ryan Air and Vueling have led the way in opening new routes and carried a total of 4 million passengers to Andalucía in the nine months to September (an increase of 3.5 per cent)—3.3 million of them to Málaga. Located inland from Puerto Banús, sweeping across the valley over rolling golf greens and pretty residential developments, Nueva Andalucía stretches out over the three golf courses; Los Naranjos, Las Brisas and Aloha Golf, and incorporates a great many fashionable bars, cafés and restaurants as well as the much-loved walking spot, Turtle Lake.
But for hikers and walkers in search of some unspoiled countryside in the heart of Nueva Andalucía there is the often-overlooked rambling spot of La Quinta Reservoir. This picturesque rural retreat is a wonderful place to escape to for an early morning dog walk, a pensive saunter or a fun Sunday stroll with all the family.
The journey to the reservoir is an exciting adventure in itself; turn right before the arch leading up to La Quinta and drive all the way until it becomes a dirt track, following it off the beaten track as it meanders through the countryside, chasing the river all the way until you reach a clearing where you can park.
